NEW DELHI: Heavy rainfall has been reported in the national capital region. With the water level in the Yamuna river rising, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority announced that traffic movement through the old railway bridge has been halted from 5 pm on Tuesday.
The government has made necessary preparations to deal with possible flooding if the water level rises further. Due to heavy rain today, water was released from the Hathni Kund barrage after the level there increased. This has caused the Yamuna's water level to rise, and reports suggest that it may continue to rise over the next 32 hours. The risk of flooding cannot be ruled out if the rain persists.
On Monday, authorities had warned people living along the banks of the Yamuna to move to safer places. The river's water level rose after the heavy showers on Monday night, flooding several homes in Delhi-NCR. Waterlogging on the Delhi-Gurugram highway also caused severe traffic jams.
Due to the bad weather, several flights to and from Delhi may be delayed or diverted. This is likely to disrupt the overall flight schedule.
