BHUBANESWAR: Those standing under the apartment were shocked to see Rs 500 currency notes raining down. It was later learned that it was the cleverness of an Odisha government official to avoid the Vigilance catching black money. The Vigilance, who recovered the money in front of witnesses, took the engineer into custody. The incident took place in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer of the Rural Development Department, was arrested. The Vigilance reached Sarangi's flat following allegations related to illegal wealth acquisition. Sarangi, who was scared, took the money and threw it outside.

The Vigilance team simultaneously raided his residential house at Angul's Karadagadia and flats in Bhubaneswar, Siula and Pipli. More than Rs 2 crore was seized. Officials said that Rs 1 crore was seized from a flat in Bhubaneswar and Rs 1.1 crore from a house in Angul.

Meanwhile, in another case in Odisha, the CBI arrested an ED deputy director for accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh. A person identified as Chintan Raghuvanshi had demanded Rs 50 lakh from a mining businessman.
