NEW DELHI: A long-standing demand of train passengers is finally being met. The Railways has introduced new measures that will benefit elderly passengers and senior women. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that senior citizens and women will automatically receive preference for lower berths, even if they do not select the option while booking their tickets. This facility will also be extended to persons with disabilities and pregnant women.
Speaking in Parliament, the minister added that Vande Bharat trains will be equipped with wheelchair facilities in the first and last coaches, along with disabled-friendly toilets.
The Railways had earlier assured passengers that lower berths would be reserved for elderly passengers and women. According to Vaishnaw, this system is now fully in place. Women above 45 years of age and senior citizens will be given priority for lower berths during booking without the need for any special request.
As per the new instructions, seven lower berths in sleeper class, five in third AC, and four in second AC will be reserved for passengers falling under these categories.
