Highway washed away: Floods wreak havoc in Jammu and Manali, nine people dead

NEW DELHI: Heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh have triggered floods and landslides. Nine people were killed and 14 were injured in continuous heavy rains on the way to the Mata Vaishno Devi temple atop the Trikuta hill that triggering a landslide. Cloudbursts have been reported in the area. The district administration has asked people to stay away from river banks and remain alert.

Traffic was disrupted due to damage to a bridge on the Jammu-Pathankot highway. Travel was diverted due to landslides on the way to the Vaishno Devi temple. The overflowing of the Beas River caused significant damage in Manali. A multi-storey hotel and shops were washed away. The highway in Manali was also badly affected. Several stretches of the highway between Kullu and Manali were washed away.

The Leh-Manali road has been closed until further notice, officials said. A loaded truck was also swept away by the floodwaters while it was crossing the road. Several people are reported to have been injured in the landslide.
