NEW DELHI: Rescuers were moved to tears as they recovered the bodies from the depths. Even in death, a mother held her precious child tightly to her chest. This was the soul-crushing sight following the cruise boat accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The nation wept seeing the boy resting against his mother’s heart.
The tragedy occurred on Thursday at 6:00 PM. A moment of joy for a group of people vanished underwater in an instant. The mother and her four-year-old son were trapped in the cramped lower cabin of the boat. She had fought desperately to save her son, but despite having life jackets, her efforts were in vain.
Marina Massey (39) and her son Trishan (4) had arrived to spend their vacation along with her husband, Pradeep Massey, and daughter, Siya. While Pradeep and Siya were rescued, Marina and Trishan did not survive.

Death toll rises to nine
So far, nine people have been confirmed dead in the disaster. There were 41 passengers and two crew members on board. While 28 people were rescued, the search continues for four others, including a native of Tamil Nadu.
The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a high-level inquiry. The boat operator, the assistant, and the person in charge of the ticket counter have been dismissed from their positions.
Warnings ignored
A Yellow Alert had been issued for the region. Families of the deceased and locals alleged that the accident was caused by ignoring weather warnings. Locals had also cautioned the crew about the deteriorating conditions.
Caught in a whirlwind, the boat lost control and began to spin. As water rushed in, the vessel capsized near the nearby Khamaria Island. It is reported that life jackets were kept tied up in a room on the boat, and the crew only attempted to retrieve them after the boat began to sink.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. The Madhya Pradesh government has also announced ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.
