CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has urged people not to spread rumours regarding the tragedy in Karur through social media. Stalin, who condemned such messages, appealed through a video statement to avoid such "divisive and toxic" messages.

"I have seen false news and rumours circulating on social media in the aftermath of the Karur tragedy. This is very painful and irresponsible. People who lost their lives, whatever their political affiliations, are our Tamil brothers and sisters," Stalin said.

"Political parties and public organisations have a duty to conduct future events more responsibly. Once the judicial commission submits its report, discussions will be held with all parties and organisations to frame laws and guidelines to prevent such tragedies from happening again," he added.

On Sunday, Stalin announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of those who died in the stampede at Karur. He also announced that those receiving treatment in hospitals would get Rs 1 lakh each. Meanwhile, the death toll in the Karur stampede has risen to 41. Among the victims are 18 women, 13 men, five girls, and five boys.
