KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. He said that women in the state have been betrayed and promised that if the BJP comes to power, criminals and rapists will be brought to justice. Modi was speaking at a public rally in Bangaon in North 24 Parganas. He alleged that the state is under “jungle raj” and said that women are the main victims of this situation.
He said that the incidents of violence against women in Sandeshkhali are a shame for Bengal. Modi promised that if the BJP comes to power on May 4, every criminal and rapist will be punished according to the law. He also announced several schemes aimed at women’s empowerment.
"The BJP government will deposit Rs 36,000 every year into the bank accounts of women in Bengal. We will ensure 33% reservation for women in government jobs. Women will get free medical treatment worth Rs 5 lakh and up to 80% discount at public health centres. Screening and vaccination for breast cancer and cervical cancer will be free. Pregnant women will receive Rs 21,000 as financial support, and Rs 50,000 will be given for daughters’ graduation education. We will help 75 lakh women become financially strong. Women will be able to get bank loans of up to Rs 20 lakh, and the government will stand as a guarantor if needed,” Modi said
“Bengal’s football passion is world-famous, but the Trinamool Congress syndicate has destroyed this sports culture. The issues related to Lionel Messi in Kolkata brought embarrassment to Bengal before the world. These are signs of ‘jungle raj,’ and we will not allow this to continue. Through the Khelo India program, we will build modern sports infrastructure in Bengal and provide world-class training to athletes,” he added.
The second phase of voting in Bengal will take place on the 29th of this month, and counting of votes will be held on May 4. In the first phase, the state recorded a voter turnout of 91.78%.
