NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe into the stampede that broke out during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay’s rally killing 41 people. A bench of Justices J K Maheshwari and N V Anjaria also appointed a three-member panel headed by former Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi to monitor the probe. The panel has two IPS officers.
The court directed the CBI to submit investigation reports to the Supreme Court every month. The order was on the plea filed by TVK. In the plea, TVK had demanded an independent investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court. TVK, led by actor Vijay, had questioned the action of the Principal Bench of the Madras High Court, which constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The tragedy occurred at the TVK’s rally in Karur on September 27. There are reports that Vijay will meet the families of the victims on October 17.
