TVK suspends rally, Vijay announces Rs 20 lakh compensation for families of dead

CHENNAI: In the wake of the tragedy in Karur, actor and TVK chief Vijay has suspended his political rally in Tamil Nadu. The decision was taken after an emergency online meeting of TVK leaders. Meantime, Vijay has announced Rs 20 lakh compensation for the families of the 39 people killed in the stampede in Karur. He also announced Rs 2 lakh for the injured. Vijay will not be arrested in a hurry and the matter is likely to be raised in the court tomorrow.


Tamil actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth have expressed grief over the tragedy. Rajinikanth wrote on X, ‘The news of the loss of innocent lives is heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to the families of the dead. I pray to God for the speedy recovery of the injured.’

Kamal Haasan expressed his condolences and said ‘The news from Karur is heartbreaking. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the dead. The injured should be provided with necessary treatment and relief.’ He urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure proper treatment for the survivors and provide adequate compensation to the victims.

The official report said so far 39 people have died in the tragedy. Of these, 17 are women. Four boys and five girls died. The bodies of 35 people have been identified so far. It is reported that 28 of them are natives of Karur. However, Vijay leaving the place soon after the stampede broke out, has sparked a controversy.
