It has been a few days since news started circulating that actor and Tamil Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party founder Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Swarnalingam are seeking divorce. The news of the divorce came to the fore after Sangeetha filed the petition in the Chengalpattu Family Court. Sangeetha filed the divorce petition accusing her husband of having an extra-marital relationship with an actress.
However, there are reports that Vijay is trying to settle the matter out of the court. Issues in their marital life started in 2021. Although Sangeetha wanted a divorce by mutual consent, Vijay was initially unwilling to do so. It is reported that Vijay refused divorce due to fear of his political career being ruined. Sangeetha later approached the court. There are reports that Vijay has presently offered a compensation of Rs 250 crore for Sangeetha and their children Jason Sanjay and Divya Sasha. It is not clear how this amount will be divided.
Sangeetha turned a fan of Vijay after watching the film 'Poove Unakkake' released in 1996. Sangeetha came to Chennai from London just to meet Vijay in person. Sangeetha used to write letters to Vijay regularly while studying at the University of London. Their friendship blossomed into love and with the consent of their families, the two got married in August 1999. Sangeetha, who used to accompany Vijay in all major events, was not seen in public for quite some time. Later, there were reports of issues in their family lives. Even when Vijay's parents appeared on TVK programs, Sangeetha and her children did not appear.
Meantime, there were major cyber-attacks against the actress, accusing her of being the villain in Vijay's marriage. However, Vijay has not yet responded to the controversies. Even when BJP state president Nainar Nagendran levelled allegations against actress Trisha, Vijay remained silent.
