NEW DELHI: The World Bank report has recorded a significant decline in the number of people living in extreme poverty in India. The report says that this is evident in both urban and rural areas. The report has been prepared by analyzing 11 years of data. The 11 years from 2011-12 to 2022-23 were studied. The World Bank report states that the number of extremely poor people has decreased significantly.
The total number of extremely poor people in India during 2011-12 was 34 crore. However, when the figures are checked after 11 years in 2022-23, this has reduced to 7.5 lakh. This means that the number of extremely poor people has decreased by 26.5 to 27 lakhs in 11 years. In percentage terms, the number of poor people has come down from 27.1 percent to 5.3 percent.
The rate of extreme poverty in rural areas has come down from 18.4% to 2.8% and in urban areas from 10.7% to 1.1%. 65 percent of the extremely poor people were from five states - Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. However, according to the new report, there has been a huge improvement in these states.
