THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan resigned from his post just hours after UDF's landslide victory in Kerala. The Governor accepted the resignation. Pinarayi Vijayan will continue as the caretaker Chief Minister until the new government comes to power. He stepped down after serving as the Chief Minister of Kerala for 9 years, 11 months and 9 days. To be precise, the Kannur strongman served as the Chief Minister of Kerala for 3633 days.

Pinarayi, who served as party secretary for 17 years, is stepping down as the Chief Minister after serving two terms for ten years. It is highly unlikely that Pinarayi, who is over 80 years of age, will become the opposition leader with just 35 MLAs. Pinarayi took office as the Chief Minister of Kerala on May 25, 2016.

In 2021, Pinarayi got a majority of more than 50,000 votes in Dharmadam. Five years later, the party is facing their biggest setback in Kerala political history. Pinarayi Vijayan survived a scare this time after trailing in the first seven rounds of vote counting.
