THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A grandson stabbed his grandfather to death during an argument over the insurance claim amount for his grandmother's accidental death. The deceased has been identified as R Rajendran Kani (58, Govindan) of Peringammala Idinjar. The grandson Sandeep (28), was caught by the locals and handed over to the Palode police when he created a commotion after stabbing Rajendran.
The incident took place at Idinjar Junction at 5.20 pm on Sunday. Sandeep chased Rajendran, who was trying to escape from the encroachment on the road, and stabbed him. Rajendran died instantly due to two deep wounds in the chest. Palode police and an ambulance reached the spot and shifted the body to the Medical College morgue. Police said that the knife used in the murder was recovered, and Sandeep's arrest was registered.
Rajendran's wife Vasantha died in a bike accident in Palode six months ago. Rajendran was living in a rented room after this. Sandeep used to quarrel with Rajendran and other relatives during the claim process for the insurance money. The dispute over this resulted in the murder.
Police said that Sandeep is addicted to ganja and is an accused in criminal cases. He has a wife and a child. Rajendran is a night watchman in the forest department.
