KOCHI: A man accused of killing his neighbour eight years ago was shot dead by the victim’s son, a former security force personnel. The incident took place in Manjapra near Angamaly on Monday evening. The accused later surrendered at the police station with the gun.
The incident took place around 6:45 p.m. near the Kothayipalam bridge. The deceased has been identified as Jose (51), a native of Ayyampuzha and a retired bus driver of KSRTC. He was murdered by Poly (57), a former jawan of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Jose’s neighbour.
According to reports, Jose had gone to bathe in the Kothayi stream near the bridge when Poly arrived with a gun and opened fire. Police suspect that multiple shots were fired, and Jose died on the spot.
After confirming the death, Poly went to the Ayyampuzha Police Station and surrendered. In his statement to police, the accused said there was an argument with Jose near the bridge, and he fired the gun in anger following the dispute. Poly works as a security guard at a bank in Aluva and was returning home with a double-barreled gun after finishing his duty when the incident occurred.
Police said there had been a long-standing boundary dispute between the families of Poly and Jose. In 2018, during an argument related to the dispute, Poly’s father died after being hit on the head with a piece of firewood. Jose, who was accused in that case, was later acquitted by the court due to a lack of evidence.
Poly and his family had filed an appeal in a higher court, but it did not succeed. Police believe this grudge led to the shooting. Investigators also said the accused had earlier left the BSF before completing his service period. Jose is survived by his wife Alphonsa and children Gia and Gerald.
