THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There was a major theft at the house of Congress leader Appukuttan Pillai, former vice president of Nellanad panchayat. 40 sovereigns of gold and cash of Rs 5000 were stolen from Palathara Suresh Bhavan in Valiyakattakkal.

The theft happened Thursday morning. The thief entered the house by breaking open the kitchen door using an iron rod while the family was sleeping. He then stole the gold and cash kept in the cupboard of the room on the upper floor. Appukuttan Pillai, his wife, son and daughter-in-law, and other family members live in this house. All were sleeping on the ground floor. The police suspect that the theft was committed by someone who knows all these things.

When Appukuttan Pillai's daughter-in-law woke up after hearing a noise, she saw only a shadow. She later woke the others and, in a search, found the iron rod, the envelope containing the money, and the bag containing the gold abandoned in a nearby field. The Venjaramoodu police have registered a case and started an investigation into the incident.
