THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government and the National Highways Authority have come together to create parks under flyovers and bridges. These spaces, which were once ignored, are now being transformed into vibrant community hubs.
In Kollam and Farookh, Kozhikode, parks named “We Park” have been built under bridges. They include features like shuttle courts and open gyms, and have been warmly welcomed by the public. Inspired by their success, more such parks are being planned across Kerala.
The first park under this initiative by the National Highways Authority will come up in Kasaragod. The flyover from Karanthakkad to the Kasaragod New Bus Stand–Nullipady, which spans 1.2 kilometers in length and is 28.5 meters wide, will host a wide range of facilities:
- A shuttle court and an open gym.
- An open stage with seating for 500 people, along with LED screens.
- A peaceful park with comfortable seating for the elderly.
- Toilets, including ones designed for differently-abled users.
- An amphitheatre, walkathon paths, and parking for vehicles.
In addition, walls and pillars will feature cultural artwork, and CCTVs will be installed for safety.
The Kollam park, developed by the Public Works Department over 70 cents of land, has also set a shining example. It offers walking tracks, a cafeteria, badminton and volleyball courts, a chess area, a skating zone, an open gym, yoga and meditation zones, event spaces, and more.
Vision for “V-Park” in All Constituencies
The Kerala government is exploring the possibility of building similar parks, called "V-Parks," in every constituency. Public Works Minister P.A. Muhammed Riyaz said that over 100 bridges across the state might soon host these exciting developments.
To make this vision a reality, the Public Works Department plans to collaborate with MLAs, district administration, contractors, local municipalities, panchayats, and groups like the Chamber of Commerce. They aim to find sponsors to fund the project and bring it to life.
These parks are not just recreational spaces—they represent a creative way to make use of previously neglected urban areas, bringing communities together under bridges, quite literally.
