KOZHIKODE: An 11-year-old girl, who was under treatment for amoebic encephalitis, has recovered from the disease. The child from Chelari in Malappuram was discharged from the hospital yesterday. The hospital authorities said that the child has fully recovered from the disease.
Amoebic encephalitis, which was very rare, is now being reported frequently in Kerala. The highest number of cases was confirmed in September. According to the health department, 71 people are presently being treated for the disease. Of these, 24 were infected this month. Nine of the 19 deaths this year were in September.
Meantime, despite the increase in the number of cases, the inability to find the real source of the disease continues to be a big challenge. The disease is transmitted from public water bodies and wells in household premises. However, experts said that there is no need to worry too much about the disease. Only 40 percent of the disease is detected in the world, but in Kerala, it is up to 70 percent. Experts said the rate of confirmed cases is also increasing due to more testing.
