THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the increase in heat, the number of people suffering from jaundice (hepatitis A) in the state is increasing. In the past 55 days, 4500 patients have been infected. During this period, 4,562 people sought treatment. Eight people died. The disease is spreading through infected water.
Since the disease is not serious in most people, only a small percentage seek treatment. Many people approach the doctor in the last stages. Health experts warn that the spread of the disease will be severe in the coming months if strong prevention is not taken. If the hepatitis A virus affects the liver and causes liver inflammation, it can lead to danger.
Jaundice can be serious in the elderly, pregnant women, children, and those with other related diseases. Jaundice is transmitted through contaminated water sources—food and drinks prepared with unclean water and close contact with infected people.
