MUVATTUPUZHA: A 58-year-old man died of Guillain-Barre syndrome in Vazhakulam. Vazhakulam Kavana native Joy Iype died on Monday while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

As per reports, this is the first confirmed death of Guillain-Barre syndrome in Kerala, however, the health department is yet to confirm this officially. Kerala was on high alert after Maharashtra reported several cases of GBS in recent days.

On February 1, Joy was admitted to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital after experiencing weakness in his legs. After three days, his health worsened and Joy was shifted to ventilator support. Guillain-Barre syndrome was confirmed in the subsequent tests conducted. Although the treatment continued, there was no improvement in the health condition.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a neurological condition that affects the body's immune system. It is a rare disease that affects only one or two people in a million. With timely diagnosis, expert treatment and physiotherapy, the disease can be cured.
