KOZHIKODE: A container that lost control and broke the security fence at Thamarassery Pass escaped without falling into the gorge. The container that had arrived from Karnataka with two-wheelers was involved in the accident. The accident occurred at around 1 pm today at the ninth bend of the pass. The cabin of the lorry, which broke the security fence and moved forward, remained stationary without falling into the gorge.
Only the driver was in the lorry at the time of the accident. The locals said the vehicle did not fall down as the container was loaded. The driver was rescued by the workers of the Churam Samrakshana Samithi, Churam Green Brigade workers and passengers of other vehicles who rushed to the spot after the accident. It is reported that he was not injured. Police and fire brigade personnel from Kalpetta have reached the spot. Efforts are underway to bring a crane from Vythiri and shift the lorry.
After three days of uncertainty after the traffic ban was imposed due to the landslide, the Thamarassery pass was opened for traffic with restrictions on Friday. KSRTC buses and goods lorries were allowed to pass with restrictions since the evening. Vehicles are being allowed to pass under police control. Tourists have been banned from the pass viewpoint. There is also a ban on parking vehicles and spending time here. Authorities had announced that a unit of the fire brigade will be deployed at the pass until the situation returns to normal. It is reported that lighting arrangements will also continue.
