Amendments are discriminatory: Congress files petition in Supreme Court against Waqf Bill

NEW DELHI: The Congress has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Waqf Bill passed by Parliament. The petition was filed by Congress whip and MP from Bihar, Mohammad Jawed. The petition alleges that the bill violates fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and that the amendments are discriminatory. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has also approached the Supreme Court on the same issue.

The bill, which has been passed by both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha, will soon become law once it receives the assent of President Droupadi Murmu. The petition has been filed in the Supreme Court in this context. Mohammad Jawed, who was a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) that reviewed the bill, argues in the petition that the amendments disproportionately increase government control over Waqf institutions. He contends that the amendments violate Articles 14, 25, 26, 29, and 300A of the Constitution.

Jawed further stated that more political parties are likely to move the court against the bill. “Everyone in Parliament opposed the bill, calling it unconstitutional. Just because you have a majority, does that mean you can pass anything, even if it is illegal?” he questioned.
