Another case of amoebic infection in state; 47-year-old of Kozhikode tests positive

KOZHIKODE: One more person has been confirmed of amoebic meningoencephalitis (AME) known as brain-eating amoeba, in the state. A 47-year-old of Chelambra, who is undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College, has been confirmed of the disease. He had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for the past 20 days. The disease was confirmed during a test conducted yesterday. It has also been reported that he had worked in Kannur a month ago. As part of the precautions, chlorination has been carried out in 80 wards in the area where the disease was confirmed.


A seven-year-old boy was confirmed to have the disease in Kozhikode yesterday. The brother of Anaya, a nine-year-old of Thamarassery, who died of amoebic encephalitis, was confirmed to have the disease. The seven-year-old boy was confirmed to have the disease during a test conducted yesterday. This child had also bathed in a pond near his house.


Sanoop's daughter Anaya died of amoebic encephalitis at Anappara inThamarassery last Thursday. Anaya and her siblings had practiced swimming in a pond near their house three weeks ago. The health department's initial assessment is that this pond was the source of the disease.


An 11-year-old girl from Chelari, Malappuram was also diagnosed with the disease on Wednesday. The child is currently undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College. The child, who was suffering from high fever, was admitted to the hospital. After showing symptoms, the child's swab was collected at night. The test was conducted at the microbiology lab of the medical college. Health experts said that tests to find the source of the disease will be conducted soon.
