KANNUR: The report of the jail DIG said the old blocks where prisoners are kept in the Central Jail are very old and are not strong enough. There is a security threat also. The intelligence department has also reported that such buildings facilitate prison escapes.
There are ten old blocks and one new block in Kannur Central Jail. Plastic sheets have been tied up due to leakage in the ron roof of the old blocks. Block number 10, which houses the most serious criminals and those sentenced to death, is also in a dilapidated condition. Ripper Jayanandan escaped from the same block. The intelligence report said that information has been received that another prisoner was also planning to escape from Kannur Central Jail.
Meantime, the investigation report of the jail DIG said the notorious criminal Govindachamy did not receive any help from anyone to escape from the Kannur Central Jail. There is no proof for the staff or fellow prisoners helping him in the jailbreak. There is confusion about the cloth in the cell. His left hand is remarkably strong. The report also recommended a scientific examination on the cutting of the iron bars.
A team led by Kannur Town Inspector Sreejith Koderi had recorded the statements of the jail authorities and fellow prisoners. The statements of the prisoners in block number 10 where Govindachamy was housed, have been recorded. The internal investigation of the prison department has also been completed. Northern Region DIG V Jayakumar conducted the investigation. Three police officers have been suspended in the incident. An action has been recommended against one.
