KOTTAYAM: Bird flu has been confirmed in the district. Bird flu was confirmed in the farms of two farmers in Arpookkara and Thalayazham panchayats. Steps have been initiated to kill the birds in these farms.

The officials informed that about eight thousand birds will be culled by this evening. The district administration has banned the sale of meat for the next three days within a radius of ten kilometers after the bird flu was confirmed.

Being a geographically more inland area, the disease is less likely to spread to larger areas. So, there is no need to panic, said the animal welfare department. Meantime, farmers are deeply concerned. This is a major blow to the poultry farmers ahead of Christmas and New Year
