KALPETTA: Union Ministry of Environment has given preliminary approval for a 6.8 km tunnel road connecting Kozhikode and Wayanad districts as an alternative to Wayanad Pass. A four-lane road will be constructed in twin tunnels. 1000 crore rupees have been allocated in the budget for tunnels.
The tunnel runs from Thiruvambady Aanakkampoyil in Kozhikode district to Kalladi in Wayanad district. Thiruvambady to Kalladi is 54 km. and the journey takes an hour and a half. When the tunnel road comes, the distance will be reduced to 10 km and the travel time will be reduced to 15 minutes. With this, Wayanad-Kozhikode and Bengaluru-Mysore travel will become easier. From Thiruvambady to the National Highway, one has to travel about 75 km at present and it will be reduced to 30 km with the tunnel road.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had announced that the tunnel road will be crucial in the development of Malabar in 2021 in the government's 100-day action plan. The goal is to complete it in three years. The government's environmental impact study will be completed in July and the tunnel work will start after this. A two-lane road will be constructed from Kalladi to Meppadi for a distance of 9 km. The Ministry of Environment has proposed that 17.263 hectares of forest land be planted instead of the forest land utilized for the tunnel road. This work will be done on the land acquired by the forest department in Chullikadu, Kollivayal, Madaparambu, and Manalvayal villages of the South Wayanad division.
Wayanad Tunnel Road is one of the 30 projects that the Chief Minister will personally inspect. The work progress is expedited as part of the review meeting held once in three months. Land acquisition of dumping yard and private land is in progress. 4.82 hectares of land will be acquired in Meppadi Kottappadi village under various survey numbers.
