THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Clashes broke out during an SFI protest at the headquarters of the University of Kerala. The SFI protested in front of the Registrar's office and the Vice Chancellor's chamber, alleging that Dr Mohanan Kunnummal obstructed the university's arts festival and did not allow Travelling Allowance for sportspersons. The SFI accused the VC of not even being willing to discuss the legitimate demands of the students.

On Tuesday morning, SFI students entered the university headquarters by jumping over the barricades erected by the police at the entrance. The activists refused to retreat despite police using water cannons. The protest spread to the streets after the police forcibly arrested the university union chairman, Ashwin.

Union Chairman Ashwin was taken into custody by the police around noon. All the activists who blocked the police vehicle were forcibly removed. A large police contingent was deployed at the university headquarters in view of the tense situation. The activists are continuing their protest demanding the release of the arrested leaders.
