THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The condition of Affan, the accused in the Venjaramoodu massacre case, remains to be critical. Affan (23), who attempted suicide in the UTB block of the Central Jail, is on ventilator at the medical college hospital. He has suffered serious brain and heart damages. He had three seizures as soon as he was taken to the hospital on Sunday. It is hinted that action is likely to be taken against the prison officials in the incident. Since he has attempted suicide before, an investigation has been launched into the lack of proper security arrangements on the day of the incident despite a police report requiring extreme caution.
Affan attempted suicide while being remanded in the Poojappura Central Jail in the case of murdering five including his brother and girlfriend. He hanged himself in the washroom using a mundu around 11 am on Sunday.
When he was taken out to watch TV, he said that he wants to go to the washroom. He took the mundu that was hung nearby and went inside the washroom. When he did not return and did not respond to knocks, the jail staff broke open the door and found him hanging. He was immediately taken to the medical college at around 11.20 am after cutting the mundu. He had lost consciousness due to the tight knot around his neck.
He is presently showing occasional signs of epilepsy. The decrease in the amount of oxygen reaching the brain is also affecting the treatment. The investigation team submitted the charge sheet on Friday in the case of murdering his paternal grandmother Salma Beevi. He murdered them on February 24.
