NEW DELHI: Covid cases are soaring in the country with 564 people testing positive for the disease in the last 24 hours. With this, the total number of patients has increased to 4,866. Seven deaths have also been reported.

The three people who succumbed to the disease were from Maharashtra, two each from Delhi and Karnataka. Six of the seven were elderly and had underlying health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and pneumonia. A five-month-old baby boy was also among the victims.

The big surge in Covid is reported in India after a hiatus. On May 22, there were 257 active cases. Currently, the number of patients has reached close to 5,000. The Union Health Ministry has directed the states to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators and essential medicines in the wake of the increasing number of COVID cases in the country. Avoid visiting crowded places when sick. People with respiratory diseases should seek medical attention if their symptoms worsen.

Kerala has the highest number of Covid cases, followed by Delhi, West Bengal and Maharashtra. In Kerala, 287 more people have been confirmed to have Covid in the last 24 hours. 1373 people are currently undergoing treatment. There have been 9 deaths this year.
