Dalit woman illegally detained at Peroorkada station: Suspended SI to be quizzed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Suspended SI SG Prasad and Grade ASI Prasannakumar will be questioned under the leadership of Pathanamthitta District Crime Branch DySP KA Vidyadharan in connection with the 21-hour detention of innocent Dalit woman R Bindu (39) at Peroorkada station on fake charges of jewellery theft.

Both were suspended for illegally detaining a Dalit woman. The investigation team will record the statements of all the police officers at the station. Another person, accused in a drug case was at the station that night. His statement will also be recorded.

As per the complaint, Bindu was forced to spread newspaper on the floor and sit on it. When asked for water to drink, the police officers told her to use water from the bucket inside the toilet.

The investigation team is examining the CCTV footage at the station. Bindu's statement was recorded. Southern Region IG S. Shyamsunder has directed to submit the investigation report by July 7. The circumstances surrounding the false theft complaint against Bindu, the harassment faced at the station, and the lapses in police action will also be investigated.
