Deepak's suicide abettor remanded: How many years will Shimjita Mustafa serve if found guilty?

KOZHIKODE: Shimjitha Mustafa, the accused in the case of Deepak committing suicide after depression over allegations of sexual assault, has been remanded. The accused will be transferred to Manjeri jail. Shimjitha was arrested on the sixth day after the incident. She is currently remanded for 14 days. Deepak, a native of Govindapuram, Kozhikode, committed suicide after Shimjitha circulated a video on social media alleging sexual misconduct on a bus.

The police had issued a lookout notice for Shimjitha Mustafa. Shimjitha was arrested on the sixth day after the incident. The Kozhikode Medical College Police had registered an FIR against Shimjitha, who shared the video on social media. The accused has been charged with abetment to suicide under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Shimjitha has been charged with a crime that can lead to imprisonment for up to ten years and a fine.

Deepak committed suicide after Shimjitha Mustafa posted a video on Instagram alleging sexual inappropriate behaviour from Deepak in a private bus called Al Ameen in Payyannur. The police had collected CCTV footage from this private bus. The visuals of Deepak and Shimjitha are not clear. The police have also started trying to recover the full portion of the video posted by the accused on Instagram. The police suspect that the video has been edited. Action was taken against the accused based on a complaint filed by Deepak's mother.
