KOCHI: A school in Ernakulam has been temporarily closed following a dispute over the wearing of the hijab. St. Rita’s High School in Palluruthy was shut after a Class 8 student requested to attend classes wearing a hijab. The school management stated that the hijab is not permitted and is not part of the official uniform, leading to a conflict that prompted the temporary closure.

The management said the decision to close the school was also influenced by outsiders creating a tense situation around the incident. The authorities had approached the High Court seeking security, following which the police provided protection. Principal Sister Helena said the school will remain closed for two days to relieve the mental stress faced by students. She added that she could not comment further on the matter as the matter is under consideration by the court.

However, the student’s parent maintained that their child should be permitted to wear a hijab, pointing out that it had never been a problem at her previous school. He also alleged that the management had intentionally intensified the current dispute. Meanwhile, PTA President Joshi Kaithavalappil told the media that only the school uniform is permitted on campus. He added that the school is willing to teach the student, provided she adheres to the school rules. Education authorities have visited the school to gather information regarding the incident.
