THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Motor Vehicles Department may amend the Central Motor Vehicles Act in a bid to raise the total traffic violations committed by a driver to ten, resulting in the cancellation of a driver's license. According to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, it requires just five or more traffic violations in a year to cancel a driver’s license. The department will submit a report to the government in this regard.
The department's move comes after Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar clarified that the amended law, which came into effect from January 1, will not be implemented in the state as it is. However, the department is putting forward the position that goods lorries and buses violate the law the most and demands stricter measures to control them.
The Centre amended the law on the 21st, including stricter provisions aimed at reducing road accidents. The department tried to implement this in the state, but Minister Ganesh Kumar put a roadblock and suggested amending it.
