KANNUR: In light of the ongoing heavy rainfall, a holiday has been declared for educational institutions in two districts tomorrow. The holiday applies to schools and colleges in Kannur and Kasargod districts.

The District Collector of Kannur announced that all educational institutions, including anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres, and special classes, will remain closed on Thursday (May 29, 2025). This decision comes as a red alert has been issued in the district due to persistent heavy rain.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a red alert for Kasargod district on May 29 and 30. As a precautionary measure, District Collector K Inbasekar IAS has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, tuition centres, special classes, anganwadis, and madrasas on May 29.

However, there will be no change to pre-scheduled examinations. Additionally, due to the red alert, quarries in the district are not permitted to operate on May 29 and 30. Tourist destinations, including Ranipuram, will remain closed on red alert days. Tourists will not be allowed on beaches. People are also advised against travelling through hilly areas at night.

Thunderstorm alert issued
The IMD has warned that isolated places in Kerala are likely to receive rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms from today to Friday. A red alert has been issued today for Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. An orange alert is in effect for Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod, while Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha remain under a yellow alert.

The IMD has also forecast moderate rainfall and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h in isolated areas of Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, and Malappuram districts within the next three hours.

Along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts, strong winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h—and at times up to 60 km/h—along with rough weather conditions are likely. The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until Sunday.
