Five-year-old boy contracts rabies after bitten by stray dog in Kannur

KANNUR: A family has filed a complaint in the incident of a five-year-old boy contracting rabies after bitten by a stray dog two weeks ago. The child’s parents are from Tamil Nadu. The child is on ventilator at Pariyaram Medical College Hospital and is in a critical condition. The child was bitten near S N Park in Payyambalam on May 31. The family said the child was immediately taken to the hospital and vaccinated. The child was bitten in the eye and leg. The hospital explained that the bite wounds on the face caused the rabies to enter the brain.


Meantime, there were attacks by stray dogs in Kannur city yesterday as well. 21 including a disabled person, were bitten by a stray dog around 6 am yesterday. The dog attacks were in Thavakkara bus stand area, SBI, Prabhat Junction, railway station area and plaza. 11 people were bitten from the railway station area alone. The injured were treated at the Kannur District Hospital and vaccinated.


Around eighty people have been bitten by stray dogs in Kannur city alone in the last two days. The stray dogs turned aggressive in the morning and evening the other day. Corporation officials claimed that the dog that attacked in the evening was later found dead at the Thavakkara bus stand. However, there is no information about the dog that bit people that morning. The corporation health department is trying to find this dog along with a photo of it.
