THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The central and state governments have decided to construct five ropeways in Kerala, with a focus on tourism development as well. The ropeways will be built at Sabarimala, Athirappilly, Munnar, Malayattur and parallel to the Wayanad pass, connecting Kozhikode-Wayanad districts. The one in Wayanad is being built by the state government, and the others as part of the central government's Parvatmala project.

The ropeways under the central project will be constructed by the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLM). The feasibility study was conducted earlier. Contract has been invited to prepare the DPR (Detailed Project Report).

The Wayanad project will be implemented through public-private partnership (PPP). The responsibility will be given to KSIDC. The cost is Rs 100 crore. The proposal for the ropeway project was put forward by Western Ghats Private Limited Company at the State Single Window Clearance Board meeting held on October 20, 2023.

Ropeways

Sabarimala

  • Pamba-Sannidhanam: 2.62 km

Munnar

  • Vattavada-Munnar: 18.30 km

Athirapalli

  • Ticket counter-opposite the waterfall: 350 meters

Malayattoor

  • Manapad Chira-Malayattoor: 1.63 km

Wayanad

  • Adivaram-Lakkidi: 3.67 km

State government also with plan for Sabarimala

The central plan comes at a time when the state government has agreed in principle to build a ropeway in Sabarimala on a BOT basis. It is 2.9 km from Pampa to Sannidhanam. The planning for this has been going on for 18 years. The project is being delayed due to lack of coordination among departments. Meanwhile, the Travancore Devaswom Board has not received accurate information about the central plan. Board president P.S. Prashanth said that the state was going ahead with the project, and he does not know the details of the central project.
