KANNUR: Convict Govindachamy, caught after escaping from jail yesterday, is currently being moved to Viyyur high security prison. The prison department suspended four officials in the wake of the security lapse. Inspections are also ongoing to determine whether the electric fencing and CCTVs inside the Central Jail are operational.
Govindachamy escaped from the high-security Kannur jail in the early hours of Friday. However, the convict was dramatically caught from a well, just hours after his escape and was brought back to the prison.
On Friday morning, when officials conducted the routine inspection, they found nothing odd. A shiver ran down their spine when they spotted a cloth hanging loose across the gigantic walls. This led to the suspicion of a possible prison break. During the inspection, it was discovered that the hardened criminal, Govindachamy, had escaped.
Not just the escape, a question also arises about the liberty allowed for Govindachamy to grow a beard, unlike other convicts. There is an existing rule to shave the beard of convicts once every week and have a haircut once a month.
