Heavy rains to continue in Kerala for three more days, student dies after compound wall collapse, widespread damage

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Due to the formation of a low pressure area from Maharashtra to Kerala, heavy rains continue in the state. There was widespread damage as water entered the houses and trees fell in many places. Rogue waves is also severe in coastal areas. Heavy rain will continue for three more days. On Wednesday. Kerala received the heaviest rain of this season with Kottayam and Kidangur recording the most rainfall.

Al Fayat (14), son of Ali Akbar in Antheku Parambu in Alappuzha's Arattuvazhi, died after compound wall collapsed on him as he was returning home after tution class.

A meeting of district collectors chaired by Minister K Rajan discussed the situation. The precautions to be taken in the districts were evaluated. Disaster response forces have been deployed in Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kollam, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Wayanad districts. The Minister said that water is being released in limited quantities from Aruvikkara, Kallarkutty, Lower Periyar, Pambla and Peringalkooth dams.

Holiday in six districts

Today is a holiday for educational institutions in Idukki, Kottayam, Wayanad, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam districts and Alappuzha Cherthala taluk.

Minister K Rajan said that revenue officials should not go beyond their authority for three days. Those on leave were asked to return to work.

Rs 1 crore each has been handed over to the districts for disaster relief activities.
