THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Regina, the second accused in the death of a pregnant woman and newborn in Karakkamandapam is still evading police arrest. Earlier Regina’s first husband Nayas and doctor Shihabuddin, who performed an acupuncture treatment, were arrested for denying proper hospital treatment to the pregnant woman, which eventually led to her death.
Police said Regina coaxed her husband to not allow medical treatment to his second wife Shameera. After the preliminary interrogation by police, Regina returned to her house in Poonthura and later absconded. The police have received information about some people who have kept the accused in hiding. Arrested Nayas and Shihabuddin are now in remand.
Shameera, a native of Palakkad, died due to a haemorrhage after she was forced to give birth at home through acupuncture method rather than seeking treatment at the hospital. Nayas did not allow Shameera to seek treatment at the hospital despite being advised by Asha workers. Shameera is the second wife of Nayas. The couple have three children.
