THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the possibility of rainfall in Kerala over the next five days. In light of the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall, a red alert has been issued in several districts. Today, a red alert has been declared for Kannur and Kasaragod. The IMD defines extremely heavy rainfall as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

An orange alert indicates a possibility of very heavy rainfall in isolated places. According to the IMD, very heavy rainfall ranges between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

A yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated areas, defined as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
Extremely heavy rainfall can lead to dangerous situations. A short spell of intense rain is expected, which may trigger flash floods and landslides. Waterlogging is likely in urban and low-lying areas. Continued rainfall may also cause landslips and mudslides. The public and government agencies are advised to remain highly vigilant.
