THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the context of widespread disruption of studies due to natural disasters, it has been suggested that school holidays be shifted to June and July. The proposal put forward by General Education Minister V. Sivankutty on Facebook has become a topic of discussion.

Due to heavy rains, the schools often remain closed in June and July. The minister clarified that the change in holidays is being considered in this context.

An alternative proposal is also being made to arrange the holidays by combining the extremely hot May and rainy June. There is criticism that avoiding holidays in April and May will deprive children of opportunities for sports and entertainment. There is also an opinion that it will increase the possibility of mobile misuse.

  1. May and June are summer vacations for central schools
  2. June and July are summer vacations for the Navodaya schools
  3. April and May are summer vacations for central schools and Navodaya schools in Kerala

“Monsoon often comes with diseases, and children are more likely to be infected in classrooms. So this proposal is good. However, this will deprive the opportunity for kids to go out and play.” Sreejith Kumar K.C., Paediatrician, Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.

'In summer, you can engage in games and exercises in the evenings. Digital addiction increases during the monsoon,"- Dr. Arun B. Nair, Psychiatrist.

'April and May were declared holidays due to extreme heat and shortage of drinking water. How can classes be conducted in unbearable heat?" - K. Abdul Majeed, President KPSTA

'The Education Minister posted on Facebook to gather opinions. A decision should be taken only after understanding the pros and cons through scientific studies,"- A. Najeeb, State Secretary, KSTA.

"June-July is the best time for vacation as it is the rainy season"- V. Srividya, parent, Kayamkulam

'It is ideal to give the May-June vacation. Children can stay at home during heavy rains while getting summer days to play."- Chitra Narayanan, parent, Thiruvananthapuram
