THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board has suggested an increase in the electricity fare during peak usage time, which is from 6 pm to 10 pm. There is also a plan to lower the fare during the day. Minister Krishnankutty said that he will submit an application to the regulatory commission asking for this. As per the proposal, the board will charge normal rate from 6 am to 6 pm, a higher rate from 6 to 10 pm and lower than existing rate from 10 pm to 6 am. Last year, when the board approached the regulatory commission to increase the electricity tariff, this proposal was put forward. However, it was abandoned after objections were raised.
Domestic and commercial customers will be hit the hardest by the 6 to 10 pm rate hike. This is likely to lead to further misery for the people who are already struggling with rising prices. As the rate increases, usage will decrease between 6 pm and 10 pm. With this, the KSEB plans to reduce the amount of power it buys from outside. This can reduce costs, which in turn will generate more money from its customers. KSEB is expecting to increase its income through this. Now KSEB is buying power from outside by paying huge price.
In order to implement the new billing system, KSEB will have to bring about several reforms, which includes the installation of smart meters for all consumers.
