La Niña phenomenon; Kerala braces for extreme rainfall in October

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Weather experts predicted severe winters and snowfall in North India and more rainfall in Kerala due to the La Niña phenomenon in the coming days. This phenomenon occurs when the surface temperature of the central-eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru is colder than normal. This can lead to changes in the global weather.

There is a possibility of heavy rain in other South Indian states as well. La Niña will become active by October. It may continue till January. The southwest monsoon is likely to withdraw from northwest India by September 15. It will withdraw completely by October. La Niña becomes active after this. This year, the monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24.

When La Niña becomes active, rainfall will increase in southern Indian states, including Kerala. There will not be much difference in the cold weather. Winter occurs only when the rain stops.

The highest rainfall in Kerala was in 1961. 4258 mm. After that, the highest rainfall was in 2021. 3522.2 mm. 4226.4 mm (1924), 4073 mm (1933), 3746 mm (1959), 3671.2 mm (1907), 3565.5 mm (1946).
