MAYYAZHI: The prices of liquor have increased in Mahe following a steep hike in excise duty. The price has been hiked by 10 to 20 percent. The government had earlier announced a 50 % rise in the price.
The Liquor Merchants Association protested pointing that a 50 % price hike would adversely affect the sale of liquor. With this, the increase was reduced to 10 to 20 percent.
Meantime, the new price will only apply to liquor purchased by liquor shop owners from last Wednesday. Puducherry Legal Metrology has issued an order in this regard. If it is noticed that old liquor is being sold at the new price, a fine will be imposed on the liquor shop owners.
