Low pressure: Heavy rain likely in Kerala for next five days, alert for districts including Ernakulam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department has said that there is a possibility of rain in Kerala for the next five days. Isolated, very heavy rains are predicted. Strong winds with a speed of 40 to 50 km/h are also possible from August 16 to 19, the IMD said.

A low pressure area is located over South Chhattisgarh. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and weaken into a cyclonic circulation and reach Gujarat by August 18. A new low pressure area is also likely to form over the northwest-central Bay of Bengal by August 18. In this situation, Kerala will receive heavy rain for the next five days. IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts in various districts.

IMD has declared an orange alert in the above-mentioned districts. The possibility of very heavy rainfall has been predicted in isolated places. The Indian Meteorological Department defines very heavy rain as a situation where rainfall of 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm is received in 24 hours.

Yellow Alert

16/08/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

17/08/2025: Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

18/08/2025: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

19/08/2025: Kozhikode, Kannur

20/08/2025: Kannur, Kasaragod

IMD has declared a yellow alert in the above-mentioned districts. The possibility of isolated heavy rain has been predicted. The Indian Meteorological Department defines heavy rain as a situation where rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is received in 24 hours.

Special instructions for the public

  • Those living in areas prone to landslides, mudslides, and flash floods should move to safer places as per the instructions of the authorities.
  • Those living in riverbanks and downstream areas of dams should also take precautions and move as per the instructions of the authorities.
  • Those living in disaster-prone areas should ensure that camps are opened in their area and move there during the day. For this, they can contact the local body and revenue authorities.
  • Those living in unsecured houses and those living in houses with weak roofs should be especially cautious as there is a possibility of strong winds. Those who foresee a dangerous situation should contact the authorities and move to safer places as a safety precaution.
