THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Smart roads, constructed using modern techniques and in line with contemporary standards, will be inaugurated and dedicated to the public today. This is a long-pending project that has finally been completed this year. A total of Rs 180 crore was spent to build 12 smart roads, spanning 21.34 kilometres. The inauguration will be held today at 4 PM at Manaveeyam Veedhi, where Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will officially dedicate the roads to the city.
Although the tarring of the smart roads was completed earlier and they were opened for traffic, no official inauguration had taken place until now. The construction was carried out by K.R.F.B. (Kerala Road Fund Board) as part of the Smart City project.
Features of the smart roads
No more digging up roads
There will be no need to frequently dig up the roads for drinking water or sewage lines, as they are routed through special ducts. Maintenance chambers have also been installed to allow for repairs without damaging the roads.
27 more roads upgraded to BMBC standards
In addition to the smart roads, 27 major city roads have been upgraded to BMBC standards.
