THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A new scam method uses 'fake screens', 'black screens' on mobile phones to steal banking information. Malware (a harmful virus) that breaks into Android phones in various parts of Europe and commits fraud is expected to spread to India. This malware is called 'Sternus'.
When opening banking apps, the malware works by showing a fake screen on top. If you enter your PIN there, the information is stolen. If a black screen appears when unlocking the phone, it also indicates this malware's activity. During that time, fraudsters gain access to banking details.
The malware spreads through messages sent on online platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp. The warning came from ThreatFabric, a cybersecurity company based in Amsterdam. The malware appears as fake versions of apps like Google Chrome on the Play Store. Some websites allow it to automatically enter the phone when you log in.
Once infected, it cannot be removed
The malware inside the phone cannot be quickly removed. It requires technical experts' help. The malware monitors even the phone's battery level. Attempts to remove it may cause the attack to change form. If uninstalled, the phone will shut down. The best protection is to avoid opening unknown websites and links and to change passwords regularly.
