The Kerala Police have issued a warning about a major cyber fraud targeting users of Vivo and IQOO smartphones. The scam involves fake messages claiming to be an "OriginOS Update," through which malware is installed on mobile phones to steal users' banking details.
While using their phones, users may see pop-up messages such as "Urgent System Update Required" on their screens. If they click on the link provided, instead of an official update, malicious APK files are downloaded.
Once these apps are installed, fraudsters gain control over the phone and can access the camera, microphone, SMS, and contact details. Their main aim is to steal money from bank accounts.
Police advised users not to click on update links received through browsers or messages. Updates should only be done through the "System Update" option in the phone's settings. Messages that threaten that the phone will be blocked should be ignored.
Users are also advised to keep the 'Install from Unknown Sources' option turned off at all times and to use only trusted antivirus software.
If someone accidentally clicks on such links, they should immediately disconnect the internet, scan the phone using security apps, and remove any unknown applications. Banking and social media passwords should be changed immediately using another secure device.
In case of financial fraud, people should report it immediately by calling the cyber helpline number 1930 or by filing a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Portal.
