Organ transplant: More than 3000 people waiting in 'Mrithasanjeevani' after registration

kk

KANNUR: 3115 people who have registered in Mrithasanjeevani, the Deceased Donor Organ Transplantation Program in Kerala is kept waiting. Some people who have registered in 2014 in the website are yet to get a transplant.

The project started in 2012 and so far, 996 people have had transplants. It is alleged that the speed of organ donation has slowed down after 2016. This year, 50 people were transplanted through Mrithasanjeevani. Many of those who registered died without their application being considered.

It is reported that organ trade is also active in the state. Kidney is the most traded organ. There are many people who are cheated by buying organs for patients for a huge amount through agents. The price through agents is Rs 50 lakh for heart and lungs, Rs 60 lakh for liver, Rs 20 lakhs for pancreas and Rs 20 lakhs for small intestine.

K-SOTO

Mrithasanjeevani has been merged with the central scheme SOTO and registered with the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (K-SOTO). But the plan has not been effective yet. The organ donation through Mrithasanjeevani was posthumous brain death. Organ transplants between the living individuals is also be possible in SOTO. Complete details of organ donor and recipient will be available in the register. Each organ will have separate banks. All transplant centres are linked in this register. Therefore, there will be monitoring by central and state governments.
