THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leaders are demanding the resignation of Rahul Mamkootathil from the assembly. With this, pressure is mounting on Rahul to resign from the post. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala had earlier informed the leadership that he should resign. His response was that Rahul continuing in the post would be detrimental to the party as there is a possibility of further revelations. He informed his stand in the talks held with KPCC chief Sunny Joseph and AICC General Secretary Deepa Das Munshi.
Meantime, the Congress is planning to seek legal advice in connection with Rahul’s resignation. The advice is being sought on whether by-elections will be required if Rahul resigns. There are differences of opinion within the Congress on Rahul continuing as MLA. Information is emerging that if Rahul does not resign, his expulsion from the party is also being considered as Plan B.
However, there is a section within the Congress that opposes his resignation. Talks are being held at Rahul's house in Adoor. There are reports that leaders from Palakkad held discussions with Rahul. The MLA had called a press meet yesterday to clarify the issues related to his resignation, but the leaders intervened and stopped it. The leaders hinted that some crucial announcements will be made by this evening.
