KOLLAM: Police have tightened security in view of the increasing incidents of violence against passengers, including women, at railway stations and trains. The checks have been intensified as part of 'Operation Rakshitha'. Patrolling is being carried out on moving trains and platforms, and checks are being carried out in compartments where there are a large number of women. The aim is to prevent drunken travel, drug trafficking, and lewd behaviour towards women passengers.
The Railway Police and the local police are jointly conducting the inspection. The Railway Police are taking cases for crimes such as trespassing in women's compartments, traveling without a ticket and in compartments for the differently-abled.
The Railway Police is the one who files cases for other crimes. Strict checks have been made at the entry, cloakroom, exit gates, platforms, and trains of railway stations. Breathalyser tests have been conducted to identify passengers under the influence of alcohol, and surveillance has been intensified at railway stations and passenger trains to detect drugs, banned tobacco products and hawala money.
Arrangements have been made to conduct emergency checks with the help of the bomb squad and K9 squad in case of finding abandoned bags and suspicious items at stations. The intelligence department has also intensified surveillance.
